Here’s how it works:
On event days, there will be one or two
fitness contests at a predetermined location (see schedule). Contestants will
compete on an individual basis within their age and gender division (see
Divisions page). Each contestant will be awarded points for their relative
placement within their division.
Registration begins around 8:30 AM and
closes around 9:00 AM. See event details! Most
contests will start approximately 9:00 AM. Contests will be finished
by approximately 11:00 AM. It’s important that
contestants arrive by 8:30 AM. Check the website
prior to the event for any changes to these times.
There is a brief awards ceremony at the end
of the event to recognize individual winners of each division.
Medals will be awarded to the top 3 finishers in each division.
The Committee believes it is important for
busy people to be able to get in and out quickly. Once you participate in the
event, there is no need to stick around for the awards. You
may call the event host to make arrangements to get your awards after the
fact. Event day results are always unofficial until data is input,
confirmed and posted on the website.
End of Year Awards
Each competition is an individual,
standalone contest. You can compete in one or more of the contests and there are
individual awards for each.
At the end of the year, those that compete
in at least one strength, speed, and endurance event are eligible for divisional
awards. Those with the most
points accumulated within their division will receive the coveted Tioga County’s
Fittest title.
To determine your standing in your division,
we add up your points in each competition.
Strength and speed competitions are worth 5 points each. There are two strength competitions and two speed.
The 5K race is worth 10 points.
So for
each category, Strength, Speed, and Endurance, you can receive up to a maximum
of 10 points by placing 1st in all events.

There
will be no prorating of points for 2009 based on the number of participants in
a division. First place winners will receive 5 or 10 points
regardless of how many competitors (Unless there are ties. See below.).
Fees
The fee to compete is $10 per
contest.
There is a discount for
families: All youth 17 and under are
only $5 each with a participating parent.
All proceeds of the Tioga County Fitness
Challenge benefit non-profit organizations. Checks are made payable to the non-profit organization.
Divisions
Age
Divisions – Women and Men compete in a total of 14 divisions- see Divisions
page for details. Your
age as of the last event (May
1, 2010) will determine what division you compete in throughout the
year.
Eligibility Anyone is eligible to compete and be awarded individual medals or
compete on a team, regardless of residency.
Teams
Anyone can enter a team. There is no minimum
number of members per team. For teams with more than 5 members, the highest
scores of 5 members are used to determine winners.
Teams must register separately. Let the
registration area know you have a team. Each team member must list their team on
their registration form. There is no additional fee to register your team.
Team
Point Scoring
Teams can enter and compete
at the individual events and at the overall level.
Individual Events:
Teams can enter as many people as they want per contest, but only the top 5
scores will count toward your team total. Contest team winners
will be recognized. There are no limits on how many team members you can have,
however, the score of only the top five will be used per event.
Overall TC Fitness
Challenge Level: The top 5 team member totals will be tallied together for
each team at the end of the year to determine the overall winner. The 10
Point Category Rule applies.
Team Stacking is
allowed and encouraged!
Bring out your best to win the individual contests! Keep in mind that only the
top 5 competitor’s scores are considered.
Keep in mind that to
win the team overall at the end of the year, only the top 5 scorers for the
whole year will be considered. You
could recruit the best people for your team at every contest and win every
single contest, but not win the overall. This gives small and mighty teams a
chance.
The top three teams will be recognized at the end
of the year. There is a traveling plaque that the winner will receive, engraved
with their name, to display for the next year.
Ties
Event Ties
In the case of a tie, the two or more position points
will be added together and will be divided between the participants that are
tied.
Examples
(5 point contests):
In
a tie for first, the position points (first and second) are added (total =
9). This number is divided by the number of participants (2) for 4.5 points
each.
In
a 3-way tie for first, the position points (first, second and third)
are added (total = 12). This number is divided by the number of participants (3)
for 4 points each.
The
same principles would apply to 10-point contests and other positional ties.
The
event host can assign medals any way they desire,
however, points for the participants and teams will be assigned per the above.
End-Of-Year
Divisional Ties
For
individuals in the same division that have the same number of points at the end
of the year, both participants will receive first place awards. There will be no
tie-breaker.
