Bench Press

Bench Press

In this contest you can choose to lift any weight you want up to a maximum of the standard for your age and gender.

Bench Press Lifting Standards
Generally, the Standard for Men is to lift 100% of their bodyweight and the Standard for Women is to lift 60% of their bodyweight.

Change for 2010: 50-59 year olds are required to lift the same as the younger divisions (50 is the new 40!).

Pre-Teens (12 and under) and Elite Masters (60+) are not required to lift to these Standards.
Male Pre-Teens (12 and under) and Elite Masters (60+) are only required to lift 60% of their bodyweight.
Female Pre-Teens (12 and under) and Elite Masters (60+) are only required to lift 40% of their bodyweight.

As with past years, contestants may lift less than their Standard, but the highest percentage of body weight up to the Standard determines placement in the contest.
Those successful in performing to the Standard will be placed over those performing less than the standard. For example, if a 40 year-old woman decides she wants to lift 50% of her bodyweight instead of the Standard (60%), she will be placed below those who lifted a higher percentage of their bodyweight up to the Standard, NO MATTER HOW MANY REPETITIONS SHE DOES. Those lifting the highest percentage of their body weight up to the Standard will be placed above those lifting a lower percentage, NO MATTER HOW MANY REPETITIONS ARE PERFORMED.

Contest Rules:

1) Contestants must weigh-in when they arrive to determine the weight to be lifted. Weight to be lifted will be rounded DOWN to the closest 1 lb.
2) No bench shirts.
3) Winners are determined by who lifts the highest percentage of body-weight up to the maximums in the standards. For people that lift the same percentage, those with the most repetitions win.
4) This is a touch-and-go competition. The weight must touch your chest. Bouncing the weight off your chest will cause you to lose a repetition.
5) Feet must be on the floor at all times. We'll have plates available to put under your feet if necessary. If your feet come off the floor - you lose a repetition.
6) Your butt must remain on the bench at all times. If the butt comes off, you lose a repetition.
7) After your last repetition, you must pause, arms fully extended, before the weight is "racked". This is to ensure the last rep is a good one. The judge will be counting your reps out loud. If he calls the number, you can rack the weight. You must lock out on each rep.
8) Second Chance Lifts. NO ONE SHOULD ATTEMPT TO LIFT MORE THAN THEY CAN IN THIS CONTEST. However, If you are not able to get one repetition with the weight you selected, you will be allowed one more try at a reduced weight.
9) ABOVE ALL ELSE, ALL PARTICIPANTS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE FUN AT THIS EVENT. :-)
